N07 A qualitative study on how patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease feel supported in managing their disease using an app

Abstract Background Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is incurable and, for most patients, lifelong treatment and regular follow-up required. A close communication with healthcare professionals crucial. Recent studies show that E- health technologies are promising tools monitoring among patients IBD. Especially mobile-health apps becoming increasingly popular. Based on need assessment user involvement, an IBD-app was developed to support patients’ professionals. The aim of this study explore experiences how they feel supported in managing their disease using IBD-app. Methods phenomenological hermeneutic approach based qualitative methods applied obtain understanding the app. Individual telephone interviews 12 outpatients were conducted. Participants recruited from two outpatient clinics at Departments Medical Gastroenterology Odense University Hospital South West Jutland Esbjerg. analysis condensation meaning. tool consists five steps allows researcher give, opinions expressed by informant, a shorter formulation. It summarizes long statements record main meaning few words. Afterwards, informants' exposed critical commonsense theoretical interpretation broader understanding. Results Twelve IBD, including men seven women age range 18-75, participated individual interviews. generated four themes through when app helps them to: (1) strength selfcare-management empowerment (2) conserves autonomy flexible contact (3) care-relationship access (4) dialogue Conclusion This indicates IBD perceived as meaningful supportive. results suggest usefulness building functionality empowerment, autonomy, care-relationships dialogue. Further efficacy usability clinical setting, care providers, needed.
